VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA
The Honourable Jane Stewart, Minister of Human Resources Development
Canada, today announced the opening of the Human Resources Development
Canada Office for Students (HRDC-S) and launched the celebration of the
35th anniversary of the Hire-A-Student program in Vancouver.
“Our quality of life as a nation depends on the skills and knowledge
of every Canadian,” said Minister Stewart. “We have to make sure that Canada’s
youth has access to work and learning opportunities that will provide them
with the skills and information they need to gain valuable workplace experience
to be employable and to succeed.”
This year marks the 35th anniversary of HRDC-Ss. The summer employment
offices, located in communities across the country, have been bringing
students and employers together—with positive results—helping youth find
work during the summer months, and employers find and access qualified,
enthusiastic summer help.
HRDC-Ss link youth and employers. They give young people some of the
necessary tools and skills they need to find and get the jobs they want.
HRDC-Ss offer interview and résumé building advice, and job
search techniques. They also provide job posting and services to employers.
“The Youth Employment Strategy is delivered in partnership with other
levels of government, employers, unions, educators, communities and with
young Canadians and their families,” said the Honourable Hedy Fry, P.C.,
Member of Parliament for Vancouver Centre. “The Human Resources Development
Canada Office for Students, centrally located here on West Broadway in
Vancouver, is a winning combination for increasing youth employment this
summer.”
In 2002, HRDC-Ss helped Canadian employers fill more than 189,000 vacancies.
They also provided job search assistance to over 290,000 young people through
the more than 330 HRDC-Ss located across Canada. In total, these offices
helped approximately 480,000 young Canadians.
HRDC-Ss are also an ideal place for both students and potential employers
to obtain up-to-date information about wage rates and labour laws, to learn
about health and safety in the workplace and to get more information on
other federal and provincial youth employment programs.
The Youth Employment Strategy is a key initiative of the Government
of Canada’s Skills and Learning Agenda. It promotes partnerships with all
levels of government, employers, unions, educators and communities to create
a climate in which youth can enhance their skills, gain practical experience,
and access learning opportunities that will help them find and retain work
in the future.
